IU South Bend Crime Notice

Under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act, the Indiana University Police Department is required to alert the campus community to certain crimes in a manner that is timely and will aid in the prevention of similar crimes. Indiana University Police Department issues Crime Notices for any Clery Act crime that has occurred within our Clery Act geography where it has been determined that there is a serious or continuing threat to students and employees. Crime Notices are distributed via email and will contain a brief description of the details of the crime and provide the campus community with information on how to protect yourself from similar crimes from happening to you.

IU South Bend Crime Notice:
January 18, 2018

In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a Crime Notice is being issued for a reported off campus shooting.

REPORTED OFFENSE: On January 18, 2018, the South Bend Police Dept. received a report of shooting one block west of campus. South Bend Police are looking for suspect, a 17 year old black male wearing a red hoodie. Subject had fled north, away from campus.

TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSE: January 18th, 2018 at 8 PM. On Clover st, one block west of campus.

In an effort to keep yourself and others safe, please consider the following safety tips:

  • Campus Police will be providing escorts to vehicles upon request, in order to ensure safety.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid walking alone whenever possible.
  • Use well-lit, regularly traveled walks and pathways, especially at night. Avoid shortcuts and keep away from shrubbery, bushes, alleyways, or any other poorly-lit area where an assailant might be lurking.
  • Keep your ears clear of headphones and your hands free of packages or bags.
  • Report suspicious behavior, even if you are not being directly threatened.
